Stabilizers come in various weights and can be used on the back or top of a project. 

Backing stabilizers are used at the back of a project during embroidery and without them fabric may move or pucker thus spoiling a design.

Topping stabilizers are used on the upper side of an embroidery and most often on fabrics with pile, texture, or stretch e.g. towelling, knits, and velvets.
