A December 2020 study found that the Swift Parrot population could be as small as 300 individuals left in the wild. The Swift Parrot is classified as critically endangered.
They are migratory birds, breeding only in the eucalypt forests of Tasmania and migrating across Bass Strait to spend the Winter in the warmer parts of mainland Australia. Bush fire and logging for the timber industry in Tasmania have reduced their breeding habitat.
They feed mainly on nectar found in the outer canopy of eucalypt forests, and also on small insects, flowers and seeds.
They are one of Australia's rarest and fastest flying birds. Learn more about the swift parrot at Tasmanian Govenment threatened species info - swift parrot
